How to Grow Stevia?




Stevia Contract Farming : The Stevia rebaudiana is commonly known as Madhu Tulsi. It is grown widely for its sweet leaves. Stevia and Sunflower are belongs to asteraceae family. The sweet herb Stevia is becoming a major source of natural sweetener as an alternate of sugar.

The plant is native to tropical and subtropical regions of North America and South America. There are near about 240 species of Stevia Genus. It is grown widely in countries like Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay. Stevia leaves are 20-25 times sweeter than normal sugar. The extract of stevia Rebaudioside-A is around 300-400 times sweeter than normal sugar.
Soil
Stevia prefers to as  well as – drained fertile sandy loam or loam soil,  stevia is a high in organic matter with sample supply of water. It requires a consistent supply of moisture, but not waterlogged.
Land Preparation
Land is either diced and / or harrowed twice to prepare a fairly smooth , firm – planting surface. Around 05MT of Organic manure/ acre have to be applied as a basal dressing during the last ploughing to incorporate the manure with soil . With proper drainage and irrigation channels the field id divided in to plots of convenient size.
Plant protection
No serious pest and diseases have been observed. Neem oil diluted in water may be sprayed against aphids if appear. Deer and rabbits are fond of Stevia due to sweet taste . Fencing is necessary.
